God Is Better Than You Think: Understanding His Character. Pt. 2

Jun 28, 2026  •  Pastor John Greer

What if everything we thought we knew about why God gave the law was missing the point entirely? This message takes us on a journey through one of the most misunderstood aspects of our faith -- the purpose of the law -- and what we discover might just change the way we relate to God forever. The law was never meant to save us. It was meant to show us that we needed saving. Like a thermometer that reveals a fever but does not cure it, the law was a diagnosis, not a solution. Through the thundering scene at Mount Sinai and the quiet, piercing moment between Jesus and the rich young ruler, we see how God has always been in the business of exposing what is really in our hearts -- not to condemn us, but to draw us closer. The rich young ruler thought he had it all together, and yet one conversation with Jesus revealed that something else had a grip on his heart. That same question is worth sitting with for ourselves: what are we holding onto so tightly that it has become a substitute for full trust in God? The contrast between Mount Sinai and Mount Calvary is where everything comes into focus. One showed us the standard we could never reach. The other gave us the Savior who reached it for us. We are invited not to live in fear of a God whose standard we cannot meet, but to live from a place of grace, already accepted, already worthy in Christ.
