The Beatitudes

Jul 12, 2026  •  Pastor John Greer

This powerful teaching on the Beatitudes challenges everything we think we know about what it means to be blessed. Drawing from Matthew 5:1-12, we're invited to radically redefine blessing—not as having all our circumstances align perfectly, but as living under the rule and favor of our King. The Greek word 'makarios' paints a picture of complete well-being, yet Jesus shockingly applies this term to the poor in spirit and those who mourn. We discover that being poor in spirit isn't about low self-esteem or worthlessness; it's about recognizing our complete dependence on God. It's the beautiful acknowledgment that apart from Christ, we can do nothing. This teaching dismantles our illusions of self-sufficiency and invites us into authentic relationship with our Creator. We learn that God isn't looking for our polished resumes or our pretense of having it all together—He's looking for empty vessels ready to be filled. The kingdom belongs to those who know they need a King. When we stop performing and pretending, when we admit 'Lord, I need You,' we position ourselves to receive everything His kingdom offers. This isn't about shame; it's about dependence. And in that dependence, we find our true value—not as worthless beings, but as beloved children who were worth the Father's very best.
